March 2016, a follow-up meeting between Aviadvigatel and NPO Saturn PJSC took place regarding cooperation for integration of polymer composites in the design of advances PD engine family. The meeting was held in Perm Design Bureau.
Key topic for the discussion was summary of cooperation on development and integration of polymer composite parts and components in PD family engine design as well as further cooperation planning.
PD-14 propulsion system includes plenty of parts and components made of polymer composites. Now when the engine is going through certification tests the designers are focused on development of PD-14 family be means of extension the number of polymer composite hardware items and use of latest technologies and materials.
During meeting, the participants payed special attention to thermoplastic polymer composite recycling technologies as well as new trends of building reinforcing structures for polymer composites and also discussed world practices of polymer composite products manufacture, equipment and tooling requirements. An information tour of Scientific Study Center of Aviation Composite Technologies (established by Perm National Research Polytechnic University supported by Aviadvigatel OJSC) was arranged for NPO Saturn representatives during this Perm visit.
At the end of the meeting, Perm and Rybinsk engine designers agreed on further development and integration of polymer composite hardware in PD-14 construction using the capacities of Scientific Study Center of Aviation Composite Technologies.
Aviadvigatel Senior Deputy General Designer, N. Koksharov, mentioned that Perm Design Bureau has application experience of different polymer composite hardware as part of PS-90A engine family. Advanced is introduction of composites in critical structural engine assemblies. «Building of high-loaded polymer composite parts is a complex of challenging tasks to be solved all together», highlighted N. Koksharov.
